KVM is the abbreviation for Kernel Virtual Machine. This means that several virtual operating systems (guest) are executed on one physical computer (host). The hardware made available to the guest system is either emulated on the software side or real hardware resources are allocated. In the latter case, a hypervisor is needed to manage and translate between real and virtual hardware.

Switchable and network-compatible power strips are especially recommended when controlling KVM switches. They allow for a scalable setup and provide the user with increased flexibility and control. Future expansions can be easily implemented, while servers can be added or removed without shutting down the KVM switch. Furthermore, the smart IP power distributors allow users to take advantage of existing power savings potential by selectively shutting down KVM environments. By means of schedule-based switching routines, this is even possible fully automatically without any control intervention by the operator. Correspondingly high cost savings can be realized after only a short time.
